Used between 1968 and the mid-1980s, its a youthful draped portrait of Elizabeth II who is shown wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.
This is paired with a much older reverse design. The work of Italian artist, Benedetto Pistrucci, it shows England’s patron saint, St George, in the act of slaying a cowering dragon from his position on a rearing horse. The artists initials appear below the dragon in this engraving that was crafted for the first modern Half Sovereigns, issued in 1817 in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. Since then, these fractional gold Sovereigns have maintained the same specifications. They are composed of 3.99 grams of 22 carat gold and have a diameter of 19.30 millimetres.
The difference with this edition is its fine proof finish. Intended for collectors, proof coins are struck multiple times with hand-prepared dies for a polished, high-definition appeal earance. This individual 1983 Half Sovereign makes a great addition to any collection of UK proof coins.
